SPEAK
SUICIDE PREVENTION THROUGH EMPOWERMENT ACTION & KINDNESS
OUR MISSION
To reduce the stigma around suicide and Mental Health Care in Black and Brown communities by allowing our partners to SPEAK, be heard and live fully.
OUR PURPOSE
WE ARE A PEER SUPPORT ORGANIZATION THAT STANDS IN THE GAP WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE EXPERIENCING MENTAL HEALTH CHALLENGES OR WHO HAVE HAD PAST SUICIDAL IDEATIONS
Combat the rise of suicide in black and brown communities.
Eliminate negative stigma around mental health in black and brown communities.
Amplify access to resources and support for mental health in black and brown communities.
Support and encourage those affected by suicide to SPEAK, advocate, and end the silence so more can survive.
OUR PLAN
SPEAK fulfills its purpose through EMPOWERMENT, ACTION, and KINDNESS.
EMPOWERMENT
We start here. SPEAK provides participants with foundation tools and alternative ways to address their mental health care needs. We serve a community that is undiagnosed, under-diagnosed, and/or unaware of possible mental illness. We address education, destigmatization, acceptance, support building, survivor mindset and more to empower participants to understand surviving and thriving is possible.
ACTION
We can’t simply talk. We must take action. The most important aspect in the journey to mental health is acknowledging there is hope. There are actions, plans, and steps to take. It is an ongoing journey that is lifelong. But this is the entire point: to live. SPEAK works directly with participants to build mental health plans that do not stop with a diagnosis, a therapist, or medication. We partner until it works. We partner until it’s right. We partner to wellness. We don’t want you to give up. So we won’t either.
KINDNESS
We know that quality mental health necessitates a whole-body approach. We cannot support our communities monolithically. An imperative of our success is to address the spiritual, physical, environmental, and emotional aspects of mental health. Our approach encourages participants to be KIND to themselves: eliminate shame, blame, and doubt and adopt practices of self-love and devotion.
